The ground beneath your feet currently supports four hectares of gardens, but this site once served a vastly different purpose. Until the early nineteen seventies, this entire area functioned as the primary wholesale food market for Paris, known as Les Halles. The market was a sprawling, chaotic hub of activity that earned the nickname the stomach of Paris because it supplied the city with fresh produce for centuries.
