Rue Chanoinesse

Rue Chanoinesse curves through the heart of the Ile de la Cite with walls of thick, uneven stone. This street once housed the canons who served Notre Dame, living in cramped quarters tucked behind the cathedral. In the summer of eighteen seventy-one, a fire gutted number twenty-two, exposing a thirteenth-century chapel wall that had been hidden for centuries. A century later, neighbors found a carved stone head buried in a garden wall nearby, believed to be a lost architectural relic from the cathedral itself.
