La Contemporaine began as a private project during the First World War. In nineteen fourteen, an industrialist couple named Henri and Louise Leblanc started collecting documents and materials related to the ongoing conflict to preserve the memory of the era. They eventually donated their extensive personal research to the French state, forming the foundation of what would become a major national repository for contemporary history.
