The building you are approaching was originally known as the Hôtel de Salm, a private mansion constructed in the late eighteenth century for a German prince. Thomas Jefferson, while serving as a diplomat in Paris, became so enamored with its architecture that he frequently walked to the Tuileries Gardens just to gaze at it. He later incorporated elements of its design into the planning of his own estate, Monticello.
