Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre

The church of Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre features a heavy, soot-stained stone exterior that looks strikingly unfinished, lacking the grand facade common to Paris churches. Founded in the twelfth century, this structure served as the university chapel for the students and professors of the nearby Sorbonne. During the late thirteenth century, student riots turned violent here, and the mob tore the doors off their hinges and smashed the choir stalls to bits because they disagreed with the school authorities.
