Hôtel de Saint-Aignan

The Hôtel de Saint-Aignan displays a rigid, symmetrical limestone facade punctuated by a central arched doorway topped with a carved lion head. Pierre Avice commissioned this private mansion in sixteen forty. Decades later, the Duke of Saint-Aignan expanded the structure to show off his status as a royal courtier. During the nineteen thirties, the building transformed into a cramped tenement housing dozens of Jewish immigrant families, before the police rounded up many of its residents during the Vel d'Hiv roundup in July nineteen forty-two.
