Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais

The church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais displays a facade of stacked classical columns that rise high above the surrounding neighborhood of Le Marais. It stands on the site of the oldest parish in Paris, though the current stone structure dates back to the early seventeenth century. During the Good Friday services of nineteen eighteen, a long-range shell fired by a German artillery piece struck the roof. The stone vault collapsed directly onto the congregation, killing eighty-eight people and injuring over a hundred more.
