The Stravinsky Fountain sits in a shallow, rectangular pool, crowded with sixteen whimsical, mechanical sculptures that spray water in every direction. Brightly colored lips, a treble clef, and a ragged bird shuffle and spin, powered by hidden motors beneath the water. When it was unveiled in nineteen eighty-three, critics called the jarring colors and moving parts an eyesore compared to the nearby gothic stone of the Saint Merri Church. Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely created the kinetic mess to mirror Igor Stravinsky's chaotic music.
