The name of this neighborhood comes from an old path that once led directly to the medieval fortifications of Paris. For centuries, this area was a maze of narrow, winding streets that formed the city's garment district, where rows of workshops produced fabrics and clothing for the entire country. Today, the hum of sewing machines has largely been replaced by the quiet tap of keyboards as the neighborhood has transformed into a hub for technology startups. Because of its early adoption of high-speed fiber optic networks meant for the nearby stock exchange, the area earned the nickname Silicon Sentier. It remains a rare pocket of Paris where you can see the city's rapid evolution from an industrial hub to a center of modern innovation within the span of a few city blocks.
