Porte Maillot

The name of this area originates from a bloody uprising in the fourteenth century. In thirteen eighty-two, Parisian workers revolted against new taxes by seizing heavy leaden mallets, or maillots, from the city armory to fight the royal authorities. A group of these insurgents, known as the Maillotins, reportedly gathered in this location to confront the army of King Charles the Sixth. The name serves as a lingering, grim reminder of that confrontation between the crown and the city.
