Danish House

The Maison du Danemark stands at number 142 on the Avenue des Champs-Elysees as a direct result of post-World War Two optimism. Danish officials sought to establish a permanent cultural foothold in Paris to foster international cooperation and promote Nordic innovation. They purchased a nineteenth-century estate known as the Hotel Subiran to secure this prime location. The original mansion and its stables were cleared away in 1952, making room for a custom-built, modern structure designed by architect Tyge Hvass. When it finally opened in 1955, the inauguration was a grand affair attended by King Frederik the Ninth and Queen Ingrid of Denmark.
