The Beaux-Arts gallery at eleven rue de la Boétie holds the scent of damp coal and the sound of roasted coffee beans. For the nineteen thirty-eight Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme, Marcel Duchamp hung twelve hundred bags of coal from the ceiling, while a roasting machine filled the air with the smell of a street cafe. Salvador Dalí added a rainy taxi, complete with snails crawling over a mannequin. People walked through the pitch-black darkness using flashlights to find the art hidden in the shadows.
