Axe historique

The Axe historique is a grand urban narrative carved directly into the landscape of Paris. It functions as a massive, intentional sightline that pulls the eye across the city, stretching nearly nine kilometers from the historic Louvre Palace in the east to the modern skyscrapers of La Defense in the west. This path acts as a physical timeline of French authority, where each century has added its own signature monument to the sequence. The axis originated in the seventeenth century, when King Louis XIV directed his landscape architect, Andre Le Notre, to lay out a visual corridor that would project the absolute power of the monarchy outward from the royal residence.
