landmark

The water you see filling the Bassin de l Arsenal was once the defensive moat of a medieval fortress. This site originally served as a vital water source for the Bastille prison, channeling flow directly from the Seine to keep the castle surrounded. After the fortress fell during the French Revolution, city planners excavated and repurposed that historic ditch into the basin you see today. This transition transformed a grim military barrier into the bustling commercial port that eventually helped drive the economy of nineteenth century Paris.
