The fortress you are approaching was originally built in thirteen seventy to protect Paris from English invaders during the Hundred Years War. Its name comes from the word bastide, which describes a fortified gate or structure. While it later gained a dark reputation as a state prison, it functioned as a defensive shield for the city for centuries before the monarchy began using it to house political troublemakers.
