Medici Fountain

Marie de Medici commissioned this structure in sixteen twenty to recreate the atmosphere of her childhood in Florence. She was the widow of King Henri the Fourth and found the air and surroundings of the Louvre palace unbearable after his death. To escape the court intrigues and the city's smells, she built her own estate on the Left Bank. She envisioned a retreat filled with the grottos and water features that defined the Italian Renaissance gardens she once knew.
