Galeries Lafayette | Rooftop

The rooftop of the Galeries Lafayette Haussmann is more than just a place for a view. In January of nineteen nineteen, this very terrace became a landing strip for aviation history. The French pilot Jules Védrines shocked the city by landing his Caudron G-three airplane directly onto the roof. He won a prize for his daring stunt, though authorities fined him six francs for the unauthorized landing and the damage caused to the building. You can still find a stone plaque on the terrace today that commemorates this remarkable, and frankly dangerous, feat.
