Hôtel Guimard

Hector Guimard designed this house at one hundred twenty-two Avenue Mozart as a wedding gift for his wife, the American painter Adeline Oppenheim. Completed in nineteen twelve, the residence functioned as both their home and his architectural studio. Guimard discarded the traditional grand staircase to save space on the cramped triangular plot, choosing instead to install a mirrored elevator to reach the upper floors. You can see the echoes of his most famous public work, the cast-iron Paris Metro entrances, in the fluid, organic lines that define the facade of this private sanctuary.
