Square Louis-XVI

park garden

The Square Louis-Sixteen is a small, quiet park enclosed by high walls and dense green trees. It marks the original site of the Madeleine Cemetery, where King Louis-Sixteen and Marie Antoinette were buried after their executions in seventeen ninety-three. Their remains stayed here for over twenty years before being moved to the Basilica of Saint-Denis. In the eighteen twenties, the city built a chapel to memorialize them, which sits at the back of the grounds today.
