Porte Saint-Denis

The Porte Saint-Denis stands as a monumental stone tribute to the military dominance of King Louis the Fourteenth. Commissioned in sixteen seventy-two, this triumphal arch was designed by architect François Blondel and sculptor Michel Anguier to celebrate the King's victories during the Franco-Dutch War. Its design takes inspiration from the Arch of Titus in Rome, featuring a soaring central passage and elaborate sculptural reliefs that depict the crossing of the Rhine and the siege of Maastricht. At its summit, a prominent inscription in gilded bronze declares Ludovico Magno, or To Louis the Great, cementing the structure as a centerpiece of royal propaganda for the Sun King.
