Medieval Garden of the Cluny Museum

The Medieval Garden at the Cluny Museum sits atop the ruins of ancient Roman baths that once served the city of Lutetia. When the Abbot of Cluny built his private mansion here in the late fifteenth century, he faced a constrained, irregular plot of land. Rather than clearing the ancient site, the master builder incorporated the Roman vaults into the foundation, creating a series of elevated terraces that allowed the garden to exist above the remains of the old city.
