Théâtre de verdure Universite Sorbonne Nouvelle

The Sorbonne Nouvelle campus stands as a deliberate reinterpretation of the traditional university cloister. Designed by architect Christian de Portzamparc and opened in twenty twenty-two, the structure replaces the dark, enclosed halls of the past with a massive, light-filled central space meant to foster connection. The building’s design features a series of terraced gardens that climb its exterior, a conscious reference to the legendary hanging gardens once found near the ancient library of Babylon. These vertical landscapes serve as a modern bridge between the dense urban environment of eastern Paris and the academic focus on cinema, theater, and literature happening within the walls. By prioritizing wide corridors and soaring ceilings, the design challenges the notion of how a modern academic building should feel, aiming to provide a sense of comfort and pedagogical openness rather than strict, confined functionality.
