Charonne quarter

You are walking through what was once a completely separate, rural village. Before the year eighteen sixty, Charonne stood outside the walls of Paris as an independent commune defined by vineyards, fields, and a quiet life far from the bustle of the capital. While much of the city was reorganized under the direction of Baron Haussmann, this area retained its layout of narrow, winding lanes. You are now standing in one of the few places where you can still sense that original, provincial rhythm beneath the layers of a modern metropolis.
