Théâtre du Vieux Colombier

The Theatre du Vieux Colombier stands as a landmark of artistic rebellion against the theatrical norms of the early twentieth century. When Jacques Copeau founded it in 1913, he rejected the ornate, gilded styles that dominated Paris at the time. He replaced elaborate sets with what he called a bare stage, believing that lighting and the actor’s raw performance should command the audience’s focus instead of distracting scenery.
