The National Theatre of the Opera Comique, often called the Salle Favart, holds a unique place in history as the first theater in France to be lit entirely by electricity. This transition was not merely an aesthetic upgrade but a direct response to a catastrophic fire in 1887 caused by defective gas lighting. The tragedy, which occurred during a performance of Mignon, prompted a nationwide mandate that required all theaters and concert halls to adopt electric lighting for safety.
