Palais Brongniart

The Palais Brongniart stands on ground that once held a convent dedicated to the Daughters of Saint Thomas. Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the destruction of this religious site in the early nineteenth century to create a centralized, permanent headquarters for the French stock market. Before this building rose, stock trading in Paris was a scattered affair, occurring in various temporary locations including the back of the opera house and local streets.
