The Ecole nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts is identifiable by the massive stone facade of the Chateau d'Anet reassembled in its courtyard. This is France's premier school of fine arts, established to train the country's most elite painters, sculptors, and architects. In eighteen thirty-one, the artist Paul Delaroche unveiled a famous mural here depicting history's greatest masters. He included only men, famously excluding women until the administration finally admitted them to the school in eighteen ninety-seven after intense protests.
