You are approaching what was the final home and studio of the legendary Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix. He moved into this apartment in late eighteen fifty-seven specifically to be near the church of Saint-Sulpice. He had accepted a major commission to paint the murals for the church’s Chapel of the Holy Angels and found his previous residence too far away to manage the commute while his health was failing. This quiet, private space allowed him to focus on that intensive, years-long project until his death in eighteen sixty-three.
