Fontaine des Quatre-Saisons

The Fontaine des Quatre-Saisons stands as a grand contradiction on the rue de Grenelle. While it appears as a magnificent, palace-like facade covered in elaborate sculptures, it was originally intended to serve a very practical purpose: providing drinking water to a rapidly growing neighborhood. Sculptor Edme Bouchardon spent six years, from seventeen thirty-nine to seventeen forty-five, crafting this masterpiece to honor King Louis XV and showcase his benevolence toward the people of Paris. Despite its immense size and heavy investment, the fountain was famously plagued by a lack of water, as it relied on a meager supply from a single aqueduct that barely trickled from its few ornate spouts.
