Square Roger-Stéphane

Square Roger-Stéphane sits at the end of a quiet residential cul-de-sac, occupying a space that once held the historic Abbaye-aux-Bois. This convent was a cultural center in the nineteenth century, where the famous salon hostess Juliette Récamier spent the final three decades of her life. During those years, the grounds hosted prominent literary figures like Chateaubriand, Balzac, and Victor Hugo who arrived daily to converse in the sanctuary of the abbey. The convent buildings were demolished in the early twentieth century to make way for city planning, leaving this small garden as the primary physical reminder of that vanished era.
