Fifty-nine Rivoli stands on one of the most prestigious shopping streets in Paris, but it holds a defiant origin story. In nineteen ninety-nine, three artists known as the KGB—Kalex, Gaspard, and Bruno—broke into this building after it had sat abandoned for fifteen years as a former bank branch. They transformed the derelict space, which was then littered with debris, into a thriving creative commune. Their occupation faced legal threats, but the project gained so much public support that the city eventually stepped in to preserve it as a legal art space.
