The name of this space originates from a flamboyant military equestrian display held here in June of sixteen sixty-two. King Louis the Fourteenth organized this event, known as a carrousel, to celebrate the birth of his first son. Over one thousand riders took part in the performances, showcasing their horsemanship before thousands of spectators. This event was so memorable that the site has been known as the Place du Carrousel ever since.
