Théâtre du Châtelet

The Théâtre du Châtelet was built in the early eighteen sixties on the site of a former medieval fortress that once served as a prison. Commissioned by Baron Haussmann during his massive transformation of Paris, the theatre was designed to be a centerpiece of modern urban planning. It shares its architectural design with its twin, the Théâtre de la Ville, which stands directly across the square. The two buildings create a symmetrical gateway that frames the surrounding urban space. Its opening in eighteen sixty two was marked by the presence of Empress Eugénie, and the venue quickly established itself as a premier destination for grand musical and theatrical works.
