Osu Castle

The white walls of Osu Castle stand directly against the rough surf of the Gulf of Guinea. Danish traders built this fort in the mid seventeenth century to house enslaved people before shipping them across the Atlantic. It served as a base for shifting colonial powers and later became the seat of government for independent Ghana. When Kwame Nkrumah lived here, he kept a light burning in his office to signal he was working, a glow visible from the ships anchored offshore.
