The Millenary Monument at the center of Heroes' Square features a column topped by the Archangel Gabriel, who holds the Hungarian crown and a double cross. Below, seven bronze chieftains sit on horseback, representing the tribes that founded the nation in the ninth century. Construction began in eighteen ninety-six to celebrate the thousandth anniversary of that arrival. When the Soviet Union occupied Hungary, they removed the original statues of Habsburg kings from the colonnades and installed their own figures, which were later returned to storage.
