The Hungarian State Opera is a neo-Renaissance building capped by a row of stone statues representing sixteen great composers. Emperor Franz Joseph I funded its construction, but he attached a strict condition: the building could not exceed the height of the nearby Saint Stephen's Basilica. Miklós Ybl designed the structure, yet he secretly included a dome that stretched higher than the Emperor intended. When the deception was discovered, the architect famously lowered the roofline to satisfy the monarch while keeping the interior grand.
