Built as the headquarters for the Gresham Life Assurance Company of London, it served as a hub for wealthy businessmen and artists who gathered in the ground-floor cafe. During the communist era, the government subdivided the opulent offices into cramped, decaying apartments. Its current life began after a massive restoration project reclaimed the original stained glass and the sweeping, marble-floored courtyard.
