Two onion-shaped domes topped with golden spheres rise above the Dohany Street Synagogue. This building sits on the site where Theodor Herzl, the father of modern Zionism, was born in eighteen sixty. Ludwig Forster designed the structure with a blend of Moorish and Byzantine styles to reflect Jewish history in the East. During the Second World War, the synagogue served as a ghetto boundary and a shelter for thousands. Its red and yellow brickwork remains a distinct marker of Budapest’s Jewish Quarter.
