Memorial for Victims of the German Occupation

The Memorial for Victims of the German Occupation features an eagle of bronze, its wings spread wide to seize an orb marked with the name Hungary. Beneath the bird, the archangel Gabriel stands slumped, his crown falling from his head. Erected in the dark of night in July twenty fourteen, the monument arrived without public ceremony. It draws a daily crowd of protesters who leave photographs, prayer candles, and personal letters from families lost during the nineteen forty-four invasion across the cobblestones.
