Petofi Museum of Literature

The Petofi Museum of Literature occupies the Karolyi Palace, a butter-yellow building with a grand wrought-iron balcony overlooking the courtyard. This mansion was once the home of Count Mihaly Karolyi, who served as Hungary's first president after the First World War. When he went into exile in nineteen nineteen, the state eventually took over the property. It now houses manuscripts, personal letters, and the death mask of Sandor Petofi, the poet who became the fiery voice of the eighteen forty-eight revolution.
