Budapest Inner-City Mother Church of Our Lady of the Assumption

The Budapest Inner-City Mother Church of Our Lady of the Assumption sits at the edge of the Elisabeth Bridge, easily picked out by its mismatched towers and a facade that mixes medieval stone with heavy baroque detail. It holds the oldest surviving wall sections in the city, dating back to a Roman fortress. In nineteen forty-four, a shell struck the church, tearing a hole in the roof and revealing a hidden medieval mural of the Virgin Mary, untouched by the blast.
