Shoes on the Danube Bank

Sixty pairs of iron shoes stand rusted and abandoned along the concrete edge of the Danube embankment. They are cast from metal, modeled after the styles worn in the nineteen forties, and bolted firmly to the stone. During the winter of nineteen forty-four, members of the Arrow Cross militia brought victims here, ordered them to remove their shoes, and shot them into the icy river. A sculptor and a film director created this memorial to mark those specific seconds before the end.
