Rumbach Street Synagogue

The Rumbach Street Synagogue features a facade of candy-striped red and yellow brick topped by two slim, octagonal towers. Architect Otto Wagner designed this building in eighteen seventy-two for a congregation that sought a middle ground between traditional Orthodoxy and the burgeoning reform movement. During the second world war, the interior served as a deportation center for Jewish residents who lacked Hungarian citizenship. Many were held in the sanctuary before being sent to Nazi-occupied territories for mass execution.
