Elisabeth Bridge

The Elisabeth Bridge spans the Danube with a single, stark white cable-stayed arch. While the original nineteenth century chain bridge fell during the Second World War, planners in the nineteen sixties opted for a modern, sleek design rather than a reconstruction of the old ornate structure. Engineer Pal Savoly pushed the radical design through, creating a span that carries traffic across the river without a single pillar in the water. It connects the hilly Buda side directly to the flat streets of Pest.
