The Church of Our Lady of Buda Castle

The Church of Our Lady, commonly known as Matthias Church, stands out with a roof covered in colorful, diamond-patterned Zsolnay tiles. This limestone structure served as the site for the coronations of Hungarian kings for centuries. In fifteen forty-one, Ottoman forces captured Buda and converted the building into a mosque, whitewashing the interior frescoes and removing the altars. It returned to Catholic use after the city was liberated in sixteen eighty-six, revealing remnants of the original structure hidden beneath the plaster.
