Monument of National Martyrs

historic

The Monument of National Martyrs in Budapest features a massive, jagged limestone pylon that cuts sharply into the sky above Vértanúk tere. It honors the individuals executed during the Red Terror that followed the collapse of the Hungarian Soviet Republic in nineteen nineteen. Sculptor Imre Varga designed the bronze figure at its base, which depicts a man seemingly being pulled into the stone by an unseen force. History here remains contested, as the original monument was removed in nineteen forty-five and only recently reconstructed.
