Budapest Orthodox Synagogue

The Orthodox Synagogue on Kazinczy Street is identified by its facade of yellow brick and stone, marked by intricate, colorful ceramic ornaments and a large, arched window. Completed in nineteen thirteen, the building was designed by the brothers Bela and Sandor Loffler to serve the city’s traditionalist Jewish community. During the winter of nineteen forty-four, the neighborhood fell within the walled-off ghetto, and this synagogue became one of the few local structures where residents found refuge during the final, chaotic months of the war.
