The central dome of Saint Stephen's Basilica rises exactly ninety-six meters high, matching the height of the Hungarian Parliament Building. This shared measurement honors the year eight hundred ninety-six, when the Magyars first settled the region. Construction dragged on for over fifty years, hindered by a catastrophic collapse of the dome in eighteen sixty-eight. Today, the church holds the mummified right hand of Saint Stephen, Hungary's first king, displayed in a glass reliquary that lights up when visitors drop a coin inside.
