The Carl Lutz Memorial stands inside the former Jewish ghetto in Budapest, featuring a glass wall that reflects the surrounding apartment blocks. Carl Lutz was a Swiss diplomat who issued tens of thousands of protective letters to Hungarian Jews during the nineteen forty-four Nazi occupation. He claimed these documents granted the bearers diplomatic immunity, effectively turning safe houses across the city into extensions of the Swiss legation. He spent his final months in Budapest negotiating directly with Adolf Eichmann to save lives.
