Fountain of King Matthias

monument

The Fountain of King Matthias features a bronze statue of the Hungarian monarch standing atop a craggy rock formation, surrounded by hunting companions and dogs. King Matthias Corvinus holds a crossbow, gazing toward the horizon while his fallen stag lies at his feet. Alajos Strobl carved this monument in nineteen oh four to depict a popular legend where the king disguises himself as a peasant to hunt, only to encounter and fall in love with a local girl named Ilonka.
